A weight vest and belt is used to help you descend into dives, espescially as the thickness of your wetsuit increases. Your weight vest and belt must be adjusted according to your size and overall weight with lead attached to your belt or harness. The aim is to be neutrally buoyant. A good test is to go in the water with your wetsuit, raise your hands in the air and see if you are sinking quickly, floating too high or neutrally buoyant.

  1. If you are sinking too quickly, you need to remove some lead
  2. If you are floating too high, then you need to add some lead

Don't be shy to ask your guides or diving buddies on your day out to make sure you are neutrally buoyant.

The Weight Vest

The weight vest is meant for divers who need more weights than a belt can fit, or who want to more evenly distribute the weights they are carrying. A more even distribution of weights is important in shallow water and can help to keep you concealed in weed beds and shallow reef alike. By putting a third of your weight in your vest, you will achieve a more even spread of weight, putting less stress on your lower back. It is also safer than over loading a weight belt with too much weight.
